| Hi, The August Linux-Delhi meeting was held on 22nd August at 2:00pm in the Delhi College of Engineering Linux Labs. There was a huge attendance, primarily made up of DCE students with a smattering of others. In all, there were 40 names in the list by the time the meeting ended, which must be some sort of record for any Linux users' meet in India. The list of users is available here. When I walked in Sundeep Holani was demonstrating RedHat 6.0 installation to a crowd of people. RH 6 installation over, we made the agenda for the meeting. Next Utsav Bhattacharya who is a graphic designer demonstrated some of the capabilities of the Gimp on the newly-installed RH system. There was a lot of interaction, and all in all the demo gave a good idea of some of the capabilities of the Gimp. We had about 45 minutes for this, which passed quickly. Abhijit Menon-Sen next took the floor with an overview of the Secure Shell, ssh. Abhijit started from scratch with the concept of why security is required, and led us by gentle steps through how ssh works and finally ended up with a couple of examples of the uses of ssh. We also setup ssh on a couple of the machines on the LAN there, but there's not much that you can really demonstrate with ssh to distinguish it from the normal network commands available in Linux. Finally Amit Gupta gave a tutorial and demomnstration of Migrating an NT Domain Controller to Samba. After the introduction we managed to get everything going, except that the server didn't let us logon from Windows for some reason. We spent about 20 minutes playing around with Samba configuration and password files, then decided to leave the demo for another day since many of us were experiencing serious pangs of hunger. There were no snacks at the meeting this time, an issue which needs to be resolved before the next meeting. Thanks to Utsav, Abhijit and Amit for great demos and tutorials, and a special thanks to Sundeep Holani and the students and staff of DCE for making this meeting possible and a success. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, September 19, on which day we will also try to hold our Linux Demo Day. Ideas and suggestions welcome.
